Having kept a solid "album a year" schedule since 2002's
This Is the Life I Lead,
Tha Dogg Pound member
Daz Dillinger could be nominated as the hardest-working man in G-funk, which at times meant he also spread his skills too thin. That's not the case in 2012 as
Witit Witit lands well-rounded and surprisingly kinetic, popping to life with the
Mike Will Made-It production "$treet Money" (big-time gangsta music, delivered in a cold,
Bun B style) before proudly giving one up "4 tha Hood" (smooth and stately with Mz. Jenise delivering the hook like a siren song) and then bringing Crystal on board for the Trina-like Queen Bitch track "Hold Up." Crystal threatens to steal the show from
Daz, and while the four or five previous albums have featured this same mixtape-like revolving door for styles and guest artists, it works best on
Witit Witit. Reason is the 2012-ready productions from the likes of T.K. Beatz, Dirtyhunidz, and Drumma Boy Fresh, and if the closing title track didn't focus on
Daz's prowess with the ladies, that title could be a comment on how the rapper is able to put a modern twist on his stone cold G-funk. Heads up as the party numbers outweigh the headphone cuts, so those expecting tricky lyrics will go hungry, but
Daz is comfortable in this role, and doesn't sound desperate or forced. Commitment and variety are the things here, meaning those looking to add that veteran feel to their grown folks' weekend are going to find this one is
Witit Witit and thensome thensome. ~ David Jeffries
