The voice is stronger and much more self-assured than I remember, but the strong, poignant songwriting and wonderful way of having the rhythm of the song fit the lyric content is still there. This is a powerful disc by a woman who is confidant, without being pushy; strong, without being strident; and clear, without being preachy. It is an album that I have waited a long time to hear. It shows the depths and range of this woman who, for all I knew, retired when the marriage with
Ian Tyson dissolved. There is a wide range of material presented here, all springing from her roots in the folk/country vein. Yet the material ranges from straight folk music, "You Were on My Mind," to the country honky tonk of "Sleep on My Shoulder," to the get-up-and-dance Cajun-tinged "Le Moulin a Pepeere." There is a strong storyline in each of the songs, all but one of which were either written or co-written by her. The band is tight and follows all the mood changes as one with her. A real treat. ~ Bob Gottlieb
