With the exception of the famous title track, previous album releases bearing the name Zombie have contained different tracks than the 2001 MCA release Zombie does. The MCA Zombie contains four long (12- to 15-minute) songs, leading off with "Zombie" itself, the biting attack on the military that helped spark an attack on his own house. That's followed by "Mister Follow Follow," another lyrical study of mindless obedience, though musically it has a far more laid-back soul flavor than its predecessor. The big treats on this edition of Zombie are the two previously unreleased bonus cuts, both recorded live at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1978. "Observation Is No Crime," according to the liner notes, is one of the few songs Kuti performed live but did not release in a studio version. It and the other bonus track, "Mistake," have a more languid, jazzier feel than his mid-'70s extended song-cum-albums, and for that reason are actually more interesting than more of the same circa-12-minute Afro-funk would have been. ~ Richie Unterberger
