Contrary to its title, there's not an Afro sound to be found on Zulu Dance; instead the album is stuffed with a weighty selection of dub. With the Surgical Band providing the music, the record offers up hefty slabs of dub, all doctored to bring out the strength of the rhythms infused with heavy doses of melody. "Sunrise Dub" is particularly tuneful, its sprightly melody tossed back and forth between the band members, while a solid reggae riff and a punchy rhythm keep score. Elsewhere, the Doctor makes house calls to the dancehalls, treating the militaristic beats to a good dose of dubbing. Amongst a multitude of other intriguing tracks comes "Congo Ishens Dub," where congos duel with digitized beats, and a surf guitar wades into the deep waters. Zulu Dance also acknowledges the contributions of a pair of legendary U.K. music denizens. "A Tribute To Shaka Dub" pays homage to Jah Shaka, with a track that flies into the stratosphere, all percolating weirdness and crashing beats. "John Peel Special, Dub" is an equalling fitting bow to the Radio One DJ with an ear to the underground, a sizzling concoction of simmering rhythm, clattering percussion, and disembodied effects. Innovative, intriguing, and never dull, the Dub Doctor provides the perfect antidote for dub depression.
