Définitivement débarrassé de l'influence de David Foster, Josh Groban fait produire All That Echoes par Rob Cavallo après avoir confié Illuminations en 2010 à Rick Rubin. Exit la mièvrerie des débuts et bienvenue à la véritable beauté. La voix de Josh Groban a enfin l'écrin qu'elle mérite et All That Echoes est un superbe exemple d'album de crooner contemporain.

Le duo avec la toujours délicieuse Laura Pausini sur « E ti promettero » est loin d'être la meilleure chanson de l'album malgré l'enthousiasme de deux voix qui se complètent plutôt bien. Il en va tout autrement de « Una Alma mas » avec l'intervention du trompettiste cubain Arturo Sandoval, en un titre langoureux et sensuel qui vaut à lui seul une bonne partie de la discographie de Julio Iglesias.

Sur All That Echoes, tout est délicat, bien ordonné, parfaitement équilibré, à commencer par les pincements de corde introductifs de « Brave ». Impossible de résister à Josh Groban lorsqu'il reprend le traditionnel irlandais « She Moved Through the Fair » pour en donner une version exceptionnelle qui ne laisse aucun poil sec sur l'épiderme.

Plus léger, « Below the Line » offre une pop tropicalisée à la bonne humeur contagieuse. A l'opposé, « Hollow Talk » adopte un registre tragique rare chez Josh Groban et qui fait passer le frisson. Certes, All That Echoes reste une production grand public, mais lorsque ce type de répertoire atteint une telle perfection et une telle diversité il ne reste qu'à s'incliner. Chapeau bas Mr. Groban, et souhaitons que cet album soit suivi de bien d'autres du même acabit.
