There was something special in the air circa the mid- to late '80s in the metal world, as bands such as
Metallica,
Megadeth, and
Slayer first introduced the masses to thrash metal with what seemed like classic release after classic release. The Chillicothe, OH-based quintet,
Woe of Tyrants, must feel the same way, as their 2007 release
Behold the Lion (how's that for a metal album title!), harkens directly back to the days of mullets, leather jackets, tight acid-washed jeans, and white high top basketball sneakers. Galloping rhythms, manly/hollered vocals,
Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies are the name of the game throughout (they even "borrow" a song title from
Maiden: "Revelations") -- from beginning to end, no apologies. Tracks such as "Hail the Count" and the title track are sure to make perfect sense to many a shoulder-length haired gentleman. ~ Greg Prato
