Cabin on a Mountain is a cheery collection of underappreciated bluegrass gems from the '50s and '60s, featuring tunes by
Jimmy Martin and
Bob Osborne,
the Stoneman Family, and Vern & Ray. While nothing really stands out as groundbreaking, the
Jimmy Martin numbers allow the listener to hear a pre-
Osborne Brothers Bobby Osborne's high tenor, and some blistering fiddle work by
Curley Ray Cline. The Stoneman Family lean toward novelty on "Talking Fiddle Blues," but the good-natured give and take of "Turn Me Loose" must've been good family fun in the early '60s when it was recorded. Overall, a decent package with well-recorded songs -- certainly not an essential purchase, but anyone who stumbles across it will be pleased with what he hears.
