Singing on soundtracks had been very good for
Carly Simon, who scored four chart hits with movie themes between 1977 and 1989, so it's surprising she never did a full score until this, Nora Ephron's directorial debut, about a single mother who becomes a standup comic. (Ephron had written the screenplay for Heartburn, which featured
Simon's comeback hit, "Coming Around Again.")
Simon contributed five light songs and some instrumentals, in what for her was an unusually relaxed, playful style. In retrospect, maybe she wishes she'd waited and scored Ephron's second feature, the hit Sleepless In Seattle, the following year.
