This is the second and last single from the short-lived
Spirea X, which provides the transition between
Primal Scream and Adventures in Stereo for Jim Beattie. In some respects, as with "Speed Reaction" and the entirety of
Fireblade Skies, much of Beattie's writing and production with
Spirea X falls toward
Spiritualized more than anything else that springs to mind. That said, this three-track single ("Risk" is the one non-album cut) is an interesting listen, with sometimes relentless grooves armored over by razor-sharp layers of guitar. One is left wishing that the band had lasted long enough to really begin developing the sound that's hinted at here. ~ Steven E. McDonald
