"Wut" will probably always remain
Girl Unit's signature tune, but his much-anticipated follow-up, the 2012 double EP
Club Rez, is certainly his best and most consistent release overall. Not quite as bombastic as its predecessor,
Club Rez diverts its attention to '80s electro-funk rather than Southern rap, reveling in pop hooks reminiscent of
Prince and Jam & Lewis while stepping up the game in terms of beat construction. Faster, sturdier, and more club-focused, it mostly exchanges "Wut"'s existential melancholy for a more carefree attitude, with tracks like "Ensemble (Club Mix)" hitting like a ray of neon sunshine. "Cake Boss" and "Double Take" are harder and trippier, with the latter featuring ping-ponging sonics and an irresistible laughter sample. "Rezday" is a patch of digital storm clouds, then the epic "Club Rez" injects a euphoric trance breakdown into the equation, and it makes total sense. Truly wonderful, and not to be overlooked. ~ Paul Simpson
