Italian noise-sludge duo OvO are vocalist/guitarist/bassist Stefania Pedretti and drummer/occasional synthesist Bruno Dorella; they've put out about a half dozen albums since 2001. This disc shifts around, covering drone, doom metal, noise rock, and combinations thereof. Pedretti's vocals are the group's weakest element: she attempts to sound extreme and scary, but her death growls sound more like a teenaged girl parodying a death metal vocalist, and her clean singing demonstrates minimal talent. Her bass playing is competent. Dorella's drumming is limited by the small kit he allows himself, but even within self-imposed parameters, his bashing and clattering is only partially effective. The best song on this disc is the seven-minute synth-drone interlude "Penumbra y Caos," because Pedretti's not growling like a frustrated kitten and Dorella's not hammering the kit like a carpenter; instead, the keyboards roar, hum, and hiss, with occasional bursts of static or high-pitched zaps piercing the gloom and creating an ominous atmosphere that would be much easier to listen to than the "proper" songs. Ultimately, OvO are reminiscent of another male-female duo, Jucifer, and like that group, they should really consider bringing in some genuinely talented members to augment their racket.
