With the deliberate unraveling of Neil Young, the off-kilter, obtuse poetry of Pavement, and the lush insistence of Arcade Fire, the music of the Silver State plays like the most adamant lullaby, creeping in quietly, but subtly vibrant enough to command attention. On its 2008 debut, CUT AND RUN, the Nevadans-by-way-of-Brooklyn prove adept at unbridled power pop on the appealing jolt that is “Faith, You Changed Your Name.” However, the bulk of the album consists of indie-rock plains ballads such as “Vampire Practice” and forceful whispers like “Gotta Run,” making for a strikingly understated first record.
