COMPILATION

OST is Los Angelino Chris Douglas, whose name should carry some cachet amongst electronica's cognoscenti once word of DEATH NOTICE hits the bricks. OST's first disc was released in micro-quantities on the obscure underground label Dial, and made nary a whimper. But like that first disc, DEATH NOTICE treads in a peculiarly beguiling form of post-Aphex Twin ambient, with the odd Krautrock flavors added here and there for spice (Klaus Schulze's thumprint is markedly felt during the old-school moogsweep of track seven). Despite its morbid titling, DEATH NOTICE is the farthest thing from funereal music. Serene at times, mildly aggressive at others, Douglas' sounds often suggest forlorn occurrences and bright hope rather than impending doom. Track twelve harbors an especially poignant loop amidst its weepy electronics, track four is a reverie of massed string synths that possess quite a regal air, while track sixteen repeats insectiod whines and ringing tones in a pensive choir of chill. RD James could learn a thing or two from this bright young whippersnapper.
