Hats off to K Records for continuing to diversify their normally indie discography with hip-hop. And like fellow K distributed artists such as
Black Anger,
the Shinin' provide a lyrical front that doesn't include a chauvinist, gangsta front. Although not as politically motivated as
Black Anger,
the Shinin's debut EP Directors Cut features a mature, down to earth insight on breaking down stereotypes, as heard on "Stereotypical." Equally important is the laid-back vocal presence of Dr. Oop and PM, who rap along to thick, upfront beats and quiet piano samples. An impressive debut that doesn't have obvious samples or an all-around violent persona. ~ Mike DaRonco
