A good history of
Independents recordings. Calling them
Discs of Gold, however, is a stretch; most of these cuts didn't go gold. The members were
Chuck Jackson (younger brother of civil rights activist
Jesse Jackson),
Maurice Jackson,
Eric Thomas, and sole female
Helen Curry. Chuck handles the leads in a smooth baritone, sometimes adding a meandering slow rap to some of the songs, while the group harmonizes like a mini-choir. "Understated" best describes this LP; neither Chuck nor the group ever break loose and let it all hang.
Wilson Pickett would have been screaming all over these tracks.
