First off, the Real Talk label's
Dr. Octagon, Pt. 2 has almost nothing to do with the legendary original Dr. Octagonecologyst album.
Kool Keith gets the production credit instead of
DJ Q-Bert, the Dr. Octagon character isn't mentioned anywhere but the cover, and the feel of the album is totally different with cheap beats and simple choruses replacing the otherworldly soundscapes and bizarre hooks. A street level
Keith creating club tracks for the hood is an interesting thought, but here it just doesn't work, and the rapper himself is at least half responsible. His strange and sleazy verses aren't up to their usual standard and his delivery often seems unaware of the beats underneath. Maybe he was unaware since the silly Escalade photo on the cover and the liner note that this was "Cartelled by Scooby" all support the rumor that
Keith abandoned these tracks long ago and had little or nothing to do with the final product. At least it feels that way, making this another disappointing
Keith release to add to the pile. ~ David Jeffries
