Superchunk's 1994
Driveway to Driveway EP features the album version of the title track (taken from
Foolish) and three acoustic versions of
Superchunk songs from previous releases. The song "Driveway to Driveway" is one of the band's crowning achievements. The song is a post-adolescent epic of love gone wrong with
Mac McCaughan's finest aching vocals and lyrics and the kind of chorus that will drive anyone who ever had a heart to tears. The acoustic songs are all fine and pointed to a newfound sensitive side to the band. Not that
McCaughan sounds any less twisted up with passion, but the band proves staggeringly good at the unplugged thing. "Seed Toss" and "Sick to Move" both manage to rock, and "Driveway to Driveway" is not quite as effective done acoustically but even slowed down and stripped of its epic qualities it is still the kind of song most songwriters would kill to write. If you are a
Superchunk fan at all, you shouldn't rest until this disc is in your possession. ~ Tim Sendra
