“That girl is on fire, no?” – right from the beginning of her new EP, Drop 6, Little Simz sets the record straight. The straight-talking rapper, who has been a major influence on the English rap scene since 2013, lets us know that she’s still here, pumped up and determined. This release is all about fresh ideas and trying new things and is yet another testament to the rap maverick’s impressive versatility. From the English electronic influences bordering on grime on might bang, might not, to the dark trap on damn right and the hip-hop with classic breakbeats on one life, might live, this EP is a compendium of everything the Londoner can do. And it’s when she manages to combine all of these aspects; the UK music scene and her willingness to experiment, that Little Simz is at her most innovative. The superb track, you should call mum, is the prime example of this. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
