Two flutes and rhythm are a surprisingly rare configuration, but they work exceedingly well together for this delightfully lilting romp of mostly original tunes. The two flutists are the American
Sam Most, who sounds as good as ever in the twilight of his career, and
Stefano Benini, a young Italian who matches
Most note-for-note. Calling their album
Flute Madness, it might lack some (but not much) of the excitement of American college basketball's March Madness tournament, but it offers a lovely glimpse at the beauty and versatility of the mainstream jazz flute. The ten tracks (only nine are actually listed) feature both flutists in some virtuosic displays. This recording is not about showmanship, though, as it is clear from the start that while both of these superb players have chops to spare, their purpose is to conduct a dignified, tasteful, joyous romp through some somewhat unusual upbeat charts. With
Benini doubling on bass flute and
Most on alto flute (and piano on "Lover Man"), there is enough diversity to keep the listener's attention. And don't forget that top-rate Italian rhythm section led by pianist
Marcello Tonolo. Let's call this a flute lover's delight. ~ Steven Loewy
