Though the Good Times Sound System ruled London's riotous Notting Hill Carnival for over a decade, they made less of an impression on electronica fans. To the rescue ride the dance aficionados at Nuphonic, who financed this precious two-disc set of material from master mixers Joey and
Norman Jay. There's no one sound that defined Good Times, and it's reflected perfectly here; mostly classic disco and soul (most of it rare-groove), as well as a few more recent dance tracks from
Masters at Work (a mix of
BeBe Winans' "Thank You") and
Incognito, and hip-hop from
Public Enemy and
Boogie Down Productions. One caveat: the Jays are more selectors than mixers, which makes for a few bumps along the way. ~ John Bush
