Graduation is niet zo brutaal of versnipperd als The College Dropout, en het is ook niet zo extravert of rijk sonisch gezien, als Late Registration. Kanye maakt zijn tekortkomingen als MC en tekstschrijver goed door charmant klungelig te blijven. Vaak verkoopt hij nonsens in verdachte rijmschema’s. Diegenen die Kanye bewonderen als een scherpe producer maar hem tegelijkertijd verafschuwen als een onbeholpen MC zullen het flonkerende synthesizer gespook, dat je prominent hoort op heel “Flashing Lights” en “Stronger”, misschien wel de meest flagrante dealbrekers in de geschiedenis van hiphop vinden. Alhoewel het gebruik van synthesizers een duidelijke, bewuste stap opzij van Kanye zijn producties uit het verleden is, zijn de hoogtepunten “I Wonder,” “The Glory,” en “Everything I Am” nog steeds diep verankerd in de Kanye van weleer, die nostalgie oproepende samples, elegante piano’s en strijkers, en gospelkoren gebruikt.
