David Rice's major-label debut,
Green Electric, may be a little cleaner than his albums for Justice Records, but the things that make his music unique remain -- namely, his idiosyncratic guitar stylings and unusual sense of song structure. As before,
Rice's ambitions sometimes weigh down his songs -- often, the simple melodies and convoluted lyrics don't quite match -- and the expanded band occasionally obscures the quirky delights of his guitar playing, but there are enough wonderful moments, either in individual songs or performances, to make it as engaging as any of his other albums. ~ Thom Owens
