Hacked, as the title suggests, is a remix album of earlier tracks by industrial rockers
SMP. The Washington-based duo's regular releases mix hardcore rap with sample-based crazy quilts of guitars and beats, but most of the remixers on
Hacked up the electronic elements quite a bit. As a result, songs like "Chemicals (Mindless Faith Mix)" and "Born of Science (Hybrid Mix)" strongly resemble the likes of
Skinny Puppy and
Front Line Assembly, which is not a bad thing. The trouble is that
SMP has released one full album and a handful of singles, not enough material to really qualify for a decent remix album, and the 71-minute
Hacked is packed to the gills with filler. The most egregious problem is that the album contains no fewer than six mixes of the single "September," none of them as exciting and different as the remixers seem to think they are. Only the most die-hard
SMP fan will make it through this collection in one sitting.
