Cleopatra's Hot for Remixes: Tribute to Van Halen is NOT a collection of radical '90s remixes of Halen classics. Essentially, it's a remixed tribute album, where, say,
Stephen Pearcy essays "Running with the Devil" and
Sigue Sigue Sputnik remixes the end results. In other words, it's not for everybody. It's more for fans of the industrial-metal remixers (
KMFDM,
Sheep on Drugs,
Rosetta Stone,
Pigface, etc.) than the metallic performers (Bango Tango,
LA Guns,
Gilby Clarke,
John Corabi,
Kevin Dubrow,
Pretty Boy Floyd, etc.) since their aesthetic wins out. And given that their aesthetic doesn't have much to do with
Van Halen, fans of that group will likely not be interested in it either (unless they are taken with the novelty of the whole project). So, who is
Hot for Remixes for, then? For the Cleopatra cult, the people who like these twisted tribute albums, or the industrial terrorists who mix the originals. They'll likely find this amusing or interesting; everybody else will probably just not get it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
