Just 21 at the time of this release, altoist
Loren Stillman clearly has the potential to become a major name in jazz. His style, reminiscent at times of
Lee Konitz, is lyrical, searching, and swinging. He and his quartet react quickly to each other, playing both inside and outside of the chord changes.
Stillman contributed all eight songs and his music is fresh and original, swinging but never predictable. The other musicians (notably pianist
Russ Lossing) are excellent, but this well-paced set is largely
Stillman's show, and a very impressive debut. ~ Scott Yanow
