In 1999, Philippine singer and screen personality Donna Cruz released Hulog Ng Langit (Fell From Heaven). The album cover shows a very pregnant Donna Cruz. Accordingly, the opening song is a remake of John Denver's "For Baby," a paean to one's child. The song is pleasant easy listening, a style that dominates this album. Of the album's 13 tracks, only one, "Everlasting Love," is moderately spirited, and the other 12 are slow and easy on the ears. A number of the Philippine-composed songs sound derivative, as though heard before in some variation on other albums. However, the title song, "Hulog Ng Langit" (Fell From Heaven), composed by prolific Philippine songwriter Vehnee Saturno, is a strong number, containing a penetrating melody sung with depth by Donna Cruz. The remake of Dusty Springfield's 1960s hit "I Only Want to Be With You" is also nice, and taken at a slower tempo than the original. Nonetheless, the abundance of slow, derivative songs gets tedious, and more discerning listeners will desire something more challenging.
