"Human Nature," the fourth and final single from Bedtime Stories, continued a trend set by its predecessor, "Bedtime Story" -- both songs failed to crack the U.S. Top 40. This may have been due to the lousy timing of the maxi-CD singles' release dates, (both maxi-singles were released well after the songs peaked in radio and MTV airplay), or simply because the songs weren't very radio-friendly to begin with. "Human Nature" came equipped with nine mixes, and clocking in at 53 minutes and 26 seconds, it's an album-length single. The first mix is a "Dance-Radio Edit" of the song, which, in its original form, was more hip-hop than house. The only mix on this single that stays true to the album version is track seven, the "Radio Version." On that version, however, one of the main lines from the chorus ("I'm not your bitch/Don't hang your sh*t on me") is taken out, resulting in a cleaner but more repetitive song (which lacks its punch line). Other dance mixes include the "Runway" club mixes, which are more stripped down than the radio edit. The "I'm Not Your Bitch" mix replaces the verses and chorus with whispered comments, such as "I have no regrets," "I'm not your bitch," "deal with it," and "I'm HIV negative," which are sampled over deeper house grooves. The fifth and sixth versions are hip-hop mixes (one clean, one not). The eighth mix is a deep house dub mix, and the final version, the "Love Is the Nature Mix," is arguably the best, with swirling instrumentals turning the song into a late-night, frenetic dance orgy.
