Pianist
McCoy Tyner's matchup with veteran altoist
Jackie McLean is reasonably enjoyable but less memorable than one might expect. Actually
McLean is only on four of the six selections and trumpeter
Jon Faddis (who appears on two cuts) sometimes steals the spotlight.
Tyner and
McLean are accompanied by either
Ron Carter or
Marcus Miller on bass, drummer
Al Foster and sometimes percussionist
Steve Thornton. The pianist wrote five of the six selections (including "You Taught My Heart To Sing") but none of the musicians sounds all that inspired. ~ Scott Yanow
