Other than an earlier four-song date, trombonist
Eddie Bert's first three sessions as a leader are on this valuable LP (put out in 1987); some of the music has reappeared on CD, but not with as much coherence. The fine bop-oriented trombonist is heard at the head of quintets that include either altoist
Vinnie Dean or guitarist
Sal Salvador, pianist
Duke Jordan, bassist
Clyde Lombardi and either
Mel Zelnick,
Art Mardigan or
Joe Morello (during his first studio session) on drums. In addition,
Bert takes a rare vocal on "He Ain't Got Rhythm." Highlights of the swinging set include "Love Me or Leave Me," "Conversation Piece," "Broadway" and an extended "Cherokee."
