New York City slide guitar demon
Kerry Kearney (pronounced "Karney") comes to the table with this, his self-titled third album but his first for a label other than his own. This one finds him casting his slide guitar in different guises (acoustic Delta bluesman,
Lowell George country trucker, frameworks for
Bob Seger-styled power ballads, Cajun rockers,
Stones-styled rockers) on originals and selected covers. The covers, however, are so drastically altered from the originals one wonders why he even bothered. There's lots of shared soloing on this, so
Kearney's guitar doesn't dominate as much as one would expect. The best stuff on here is when he plays solo acoustic, simple and basic, contributing a tossed-off "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at disc's end that may be the best thing on here.
