This soundtrack to Gilles de Maistre's 1994 movie is very similar in both melody and instrumentation to other works by
Aubry, as befits a composer whose work has been primarily for film and dance. The pieces are all fairly short and uniform in length (in the two- to three-minute range). The melodic pattern is to find a simple harmonic progression (usually in a minor key) and to repeat the melody with various combinations of string and keyboard instruments. As the movie takes place in the Middle East, there is the occasional ululating voice, but there are no songs as on other
Aubry albums. While the result is certainly pleasant, the nature of most film music is to provide background, and this album rarely transcends its genre. ~ Caleb Deupree
