More than 17 months after the release of
Rain, the album on which it appeared initially,
Joe Jackson's song "King Pleasure Time" is presented as a single with two different remixes done by
John Morales, each of which appears in three variations, a full-length version, an edited version, and an instrumental version.
Jackson's tribute to hedonism portrayed as a royal personage is an appropriate subject for dancefloor exploitation, and
Morales' "downtown escape" version adds a percussive electronic track, while his "uptown express" version boasts galloping drums and a propulsive bass pattern. For his part,
Jackson makes his own statement about the inevitable victory of the pleasure principle by appearing on the CD cover sucking on a cigarette. ~ William Ruhlmann
