While the performers on
Kumbia Style may not be particularly well-known, the songs that these artists cover will probably be more easily recognized ("Oyo Como Va," for example, though the version here is nowhere near to as good as the original or one of its many other covers, or the
Oscar d'León salsa hit "Monta Mi Caballo"). There is a preponderance of accordion, as can be expected, but there are also plenty of drums, horns, and impassioned vocals, as well. "Chuntaro Style" and "Pa'L Bailador" (the latter a big song for
Joe Arroyo) are also included on
Kumbia Style, which makes this a good album for people who don't mind decent covers of familiar songs, or anyone who wants a basic introduction to modern cumbia. ~ Marisa Brown
