Before the title puts visions of
Fleetwood Mac or
the Eagles in potential listeners heads, think instead of the starkness of
Neil Young's
Tonight's the Night, possibly mixed with a little of the home-recording lo-fi of
Bruce Springsteen's
Nebraska.
Lay Your Head on the Soft Rock is a solo recording by Chris Wicky of Switzerland's emo-punks
Favez, much more along the lines of the confessional, largely acoustic material on their first two albums than their noisier, rock-oriented later work. If anything, however, it's even more stripped down than
Favez's quiet takes on
Dashboard Confessional-style emo, with many songs featuring just Wicky and his guitar, with a hint of distant electric organ the only musical coloration. Luckily, these are likely the strongest songs of Wicky's career, with an emotional directness that's balanced by the simple, folk-like strength of his melodies. ~ Stewart Mason
