In Dying Days has a firm grasp on how to create exceptional metalcore; with bone-chilling brutality this Canadian five-piece explodes with furious determination on Life As a Balancing Act. From the opening quote, "At my signal, unleash Hell," In Dying Days does just that, tearing forth with unbridled rage. Musically these five men are a well-oiled machine, as the execution is seemingly flawless and the way the epic guitar wails flow from Maxime Jenniss' and Alex's fingers is awe-inspiring. Make no mistake about it, In Dying Days can play with the best metalcore groups and still hold their own, and this album never loses its ferocity. Every time Mike Doucet opens his mouth, be prepared for frightening hostility; his growls are one of the multitude of highlights captured within the seven songs on Life As a Balancing Act. The way In Dying Days weaves metal with vicious hardcore is exceptional, though it may not intrigue those who have their hearts firmly rooted in the punk roots hardcore grew from. "Rhyme of the Modern Street Fighter" shines with jaw-dropping technical proficiency; Jenniss really steps up his game on the song and it shows. Accompanied by lyrics that are intelligent and thought-provoking, the song is a testament to the band's abilities as musicians. In Dying Days goes all out on Life As a Balancing Act, yet as is the case with many metalcore bands, they may have spent their energy on this record, resulting in an album that may be nearly impossible for the group to top with future releases.
