Ace Frehely's 1987 solo debut for Megaforce,
Frehely's Comet, was a moderate commercial success, just missing the Top 40 and gold certification.
Ace wanted to let his fans know that he was back for good, so he launched a U.S. tour soon after the album's release -- which included an opening stint for another glam rock king,
Alice Cooper. Recorded at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on September 4, 1987, the five-song EP
Live + 1 contains four live tracks and one studio leftover from the
Frehley's Comet sessions, "Words Are Not Enough." The live material shows that the new band could easily create excitement on-stage, as evidenced by a pair of
Kiss-era compositions, "Rip It Out" and "Rocket Ride," plus a couple from the 1987 album, "Something Moved" and "Breakout" (the latter complete with an
Anton Fig drum solo). Although not nearly in the same league as
Kiss' superb live albums
Alive! and
Alive II,
Live + 1 is still recommended to the
Ace aficionado. ~ Greg Prato
