The David Murray Big Band tends to be both erratic and colorful. Their second of two sets has the 11-piece all-star crew (conducted by
Butch Morris) performing five of the leader's originals, including "Dewey's Circle." There are some strong moments, plenty of dense ensembles, and a strong group spirit that makes one wish that the group had recorded a little more coherently in the studios during this period. ~ Scott Yanow
