These days it seems like everybody thinks doing a live album is "en vogue." Many artists even have multiple live albums in their discography. Recording a live album is a tricky proposition; capturing the performer at his or her utmost while capturing the crowd's excitement on the recording is a delicate balancing act. Unfortunately, as stellar an entertainer as
Ronnie Milsap is and has been for decades, this new live album just doesn't do justice to his abilities.
Milsap's live shows are truly moving experiences, but the album just doesn't bring that magic out enough. One of the main problems here is that the crowd noise and applause has been toned down to almost inaudible. Obviously, this problem should be resolved when the DVD and VHS versions of the live performance in Biloxi, MS, are released. The songs themselves represent the history of
Ronnie Milsap's incredible career. From classic hits such as "Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World" to
Milsap's forays into blues with "Lost in the Fifties Tonight" and "Snap Your Fingers,"
Milsap offers a legendary repertoire. Also included is a seven-song "Piano Man Medley" that turns
Milsap loose on the keys; his piano playing is just as much a trademark as his vocals. The music is great, but wait for the DVD or VHS. Better yet, go buy a
Ronnie Milsap concert ticket. ~ Rick Cohoon
