The recording quality of
Live in Poland, a 1978 solo piano concert from Pozan, Poland, may not be state-of-the-art (it often has an echo), but the playing by
Jack Reilly is quite inventive and always holds one's interest.
Reilly is expert at building up his improvisations, whether striding on "I Got Rhythm," taking "Giant Steps" as an out-of-tempo ballad, sounding a bit like
Lennie Tristano on "Solar" (which is mislabeled "Sonny"), or performing his episodic "Easter Suite" and "Autumn Suite." Although he deserves to be heard in a more optimal studio setting, the joy and creativity of
Reilly's playing comes through. ~ Scott Yanow
