For once an extravagant album title is justified! The power behind the throne in the recent merengue renaissance flexes his muscles. If you've been following merengue, you've heard these songs covered time and again.
Wilfrido is special because his roots as a merenguero are buried deep in Latin American and Caribbean culture in general -- not just in the Dominican Republic, so some of his best efforts come in songs by
Calixto Ochoa (Columbian cumbia maestro),
Tabou Combo (Haitian mini-jazz heavies) and
Kassav'! He is that rarity, an originator and a synthesizer. Though there are no dates here, I would say this collection runs from the mid-'70s.
