After five years of silence, Nigerian singer Nneka has decided to release her seventh album, Love Supreme, independently. The title evokes feelings of inner peace and artistic freedom, and that’s exactly what’s waiting for the listener on this album. The record reveals an uninhibited Nneka who’s experimenting with her voice in order to accommodate more electronic sounds. She shows herself capable of mixing autotune with Nigerian rhythms on Yahweh and abandons her guitar to successfully venture into something very similar to trip-hop, as can be heard on the tracks Love Supreme and Walk Away in particular. The single Maya is the track that best reflects her previous work; it’s an ode to Jah, crammed full of Jamaican music trends and reggae skank with a dub edge. It’s certainly the closest thing to the Nneka we all thought we knew, but it’s definitely the odd one out in this album. Love Supreme is all about love… but it’s also about change. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
