Savoy's
Low Down Midnite Boogie is made up of two different
John Lee Hooker sessions recorded in the late '40s and 1961. Tracks one through nine feature
Hooker with Detroiter
Eddie Kirkland and an unspecified bassist and drummer. The final five tunes are solo
Hooker and although enjoyable, they aren't anything that
Hooker fans haven't heard before. On the other hand, the quartet tracks are gritty, loose, and off-the-cuff blues that really highlight
Hooker's unique electric guitar stylings. While all 14 tracks are noteworthy, the sound quality isn't great. However, the combination of 24-bit digital remastering and mid-line pricing makes this an attractive compilation for both the novice and collector. ~ Al Campbell
