This compilation starts off with a bang. The Netherlands' most celebrated electronic producer, Speedy J, joins forces with fellow Hollander Math and MCs Strike-1, D-Fanatic, and Pokerface for the most compelling fusion of abstract beats and hip-hop to come out if the IDM movement. It's dark and heavy, with a foreboding piano line beneath the spastic beats. Even parts of the vocals are run through the digital editor out of control, making post-apocalyptic rap a reality. It would be hard for any album to maintain the momentum after such an overwhelming start, and this one is not the exception to the rule. Gathering a lesser-known contingent of abstract beat artists (only Funkstorung is a familiar name, and they are identified on the sleeve only by iconography), the other men appear to have the right boxes, but no new idea to put in them. Although a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging listen from start to finish, it is ironic that the oldest artist on the compilation produces the most exciting new material. Score one more for the masters, because the rest is frosting.
