Remixes is a set of interpretations of
Dirty & Divine tracks from a number of well-known and not so well-known producers.
The Cocteau Twins'
Robin Guthrie and
Tortoise's John McEntire each take their own stab at "Cranes," which bookend the disc.
Guthrie's is languid and searing, while McEntire's (the high point) is quick, dubby, and more percussion-based.
Main's
Robert Hampson does a two-part remix of "Nothing but Time." The first part is beat-heavy, but the second is more characteristically
Main in its isolationism. Rich Costy accentuates the atmospherics of "Exotic Siren Song," while Todd Nickolas tweaks "Aqualisa" into dark,
Scorn-like ambient-trip-hop.
Lucid re-works "The Taboo"; Dave Callahan sounds surprisingly chilled-out, akin to
Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie at his most doped-up. As far as remix collections go, this is quite worthwhile. Fans of the band and the remixers overlap considerably, so the sound collisions make for a decent diversion from the regular recordings. ~ Andy Kellman
