Robert Morris' quietly reflective chamber music is featured on this 2005 release from Albany, but it is unfortunate that the album is marred by an unevenness of recording quality that makes listening to his angular, delicate pieces somewhat problematic. Most adversely affected are the piano pieces, Still (2000) and Meandering River (2001), which are skillfully played by Solungga Fang-Tzu Liu, but captured with an overly echoic sound, as if recorded in a recital hall without proper balance. Somewhat better are the 14 Little Piano Pieces (2002), ably played by Margaret Kampmeier under what seem like controlled studio conditions; and her performance with clarinetist Marianne Gythfeldt of Out and Out (1989) is appropriately dry and crisp for
Morris' pointillistic textures and varied dynamics. Gythfeldt also plays against computer generated sounds in On the Go (1999), but the environment seems almost sucked of air when the electronics begin, and the sharp sonic jabs seem almost too harsh against the clarinet's more rounded tones. Perhaps the only piece to lack audio imbalances is About the Same (1999), a purely electronic piece, which, one assumes, was recorded at the levels
Morris intended. But this is perhaps the least satisfying track, due to the chirping and tinkling sonorities, which sound too much like sterile MIDI timbres.
