Released in two parts over a six-month period, Estère’s second album is a kaleidoscope of sound, rhythm, and imagination. The half-Kiwi, half-Cameroonian, Wellington-based artist describes her music as “electric blue witch-hop.” And while My Design, on Others’ Lives has touchstones—a dash of Prince, a pinch of Janelle Monáe— she samples her own sounds, giving her material a unique power. The beat on “Gun Kid” is made from actual guns being fired—and the track also shows off her lyrical talents: “Every person my bullet meets is another mother’s baby/Ripped from her breast/Life taken by death.”
