In 2000,
Nadine released her debut, self-titled album. Instead of the typical easy listening love songs of solo artists in the Philippines, the sound of
Nadine is modern and bold. Much of the sound is rooted in hip-hop-influenced rhythm & blues and pop. There are no easy listening songs on this album.
Nadine's voice and approach often reminds one of
Britney Spears, though
Nadine surely forges her own persona as well. The opening, "This Is the Time," is a soulful, pop-flavored number and moves in a contagious, moderately spirited manner.
Nadine's coy approach here is strongly reminiscent of
Britney Spears. Many of the song arrangements are daring, as heard in the intrepid "Love You Like I Do," which opens on eerie, melodramatic keyboards, soon fortified by forceful piano overlaying a sly, syncopated backbeat.
Nadine handles the song's dramatic path with confidence. "Why Can't You Love Me" is a strong, soulful ballad on which
Nadine acquits herself well. She isn't the strongest singer around, but she injects much charm and charisma into her performances. The songwriting is distinctive throughout the album. "So Tell Me Now" is an upbeat, hip-hop-inflected number, while the hypnotic "No No No" is a soulful, pop-inflected outing. One of the album's best songs is "Thank the Heavens (I Have You)," which features an extremely catchy chorus.
Nadine might become a star.
