Laszlo Gardony displays an interesting combination of influences on the piano. During the uptempo and more passionate pieces of
Natural Instinct he sounds a bit like
McCoy Tyner, while the slower numbers and the many jazz waltzes recall
Bill Evans in spots. However,
Gardony does not merely copy the past and he puts a lot of his own personality in the music, too. Performing seven originals, a surprisingly intense version of "Motherless Child," and modernized versions of three standards, he interacts closely with bassist
John Lockwood and drummer
