London’s Stray churned out 10 albums between 1970 and 1977. New Dawn/Alive and Giggin’ is a two-fer that compiles a 1997 reunion album (wherein guitarist/vocalist Del Bromham hired newcomers Dusty Miller and Phil McKee before renaming the band Del Bromham’s Stray) and 2003’s Alive and Giggin’, which contains 10 of the best live recordings from the revamped trio’s “reunion” tour. The opener “New Dawn” proves that Bromham kept much of the band’s psych-tinged rock intact 20 years later, unlike many reunited bands of this ilk. Newbies Miller and McKee could definitely keep up and hold their own, as heard on the heavy boogie of “No Future.” The hard-driving “Dangerous Games” sounds like early-'80s Deep Purple, while “White Knuckle Fever” rocks with the weighty strut and beefy riffs of Mountain’s 1970 debut album, Climbing!. “Leave It Down to Us” kicks off Alive and Giggin’ suggesting that the 21st-century version of the trio lived to play live. It could hit those intricate descending notes of the fan favorite “Jericho” before ending with the Iron Maiden–covered “All in Your Mind.”
