Nothing Picked and Placed Nowhere is ISAN's contribution to London-based label Where It's at Is Where You Are's #sevenat77 project, in which they ask seven artists to record a 77-minute piece, with all proceeds going to Médecins Sans Frontières. (The band also made a seven-minute edit of their recording, as well as a 77-second one.) The release is formatted less like a typical ISAN album and more like a soundtrack for a museum installation. It contains the gentle melodies and fizzing textures the group are known for, but here they're given room to expand and drift, rather than fit into more song-like structures. The beginning of the piece consists of crystalline tones that cycle and lightly butt into each other, coming closer to some sort of synchronicity but never landing on it. After 15 minutes, it fades out and a soft, subdued melody emerges, joined by a slow, hazy kick drum and electronic sweeps -- very much the usual ISAN sound, but with the energy level dialed down about halfway. From there, they diverge into mysterious scratchy tones fit for an experimental film, then happen upon almost-melodies and buzzing vibrations that flare up around them. The album's most pleasant, inviting section is a Cluster-like sequence of glowing tones calmly rocking back and forth. The remainder of the piece drifts between soft percolations and solemn reflections, interspersed with birdsongs and storm clouds at the end. Nothing Picked and Placed Nowhere requires more of the listener's patience than other ISAN releases, but it rewards when approached as a sort of extended meditation.
